Setting up Two Factor Authentication (2FA) for Office 365.


Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a second layer of security to protect an account or system. Users must go through two layers of security before being granted access to an account or system.


2FA increases the safety of online accounts by requiring two types of information from the user before the user can log in. The first factor is the password; the second factor is the additional item. This means that even if someone has your password, they are unable to gain unauthorized access to your account.


We are using Google for our 2FA to Office 365, the steps to set this up are noted below.


    1. Install Google Authenticator from the Play Store (Android) or App Store (iPhone)

    2. Open your browser and go to

    3. Sign in with your work email address.


    4. After successfully signing in, you will get a prompt like below, click next

    5. In Step 1, change the ‘authentication phone’ dropdown to Mobile App


    6. Choose ‘Use verification code’ for the next step, and choose Set Up


    7. In ‘Configure mobile app’ choose ‘Configure app without notifications’ and click Next

    8. The screen will now change and look more like this


    9. Open the Google Authenticator app on your phone and click begin.

    10. Choose scan a barcode



    1. Agree to any permission prompts that show on your phone.


    1. Scan the barcode on the computer screen with your phone.


    1. Go back to your browser on your computer and click Next.


  1. On the ‘Additional security verification screen’ ensure Use Verification Code is selected, then click Next.


  2. Open up the Authenticator app, and then enter the six-digit code show on your computer, then click verify.


  3. Select your country and enter in your work mobile number.


In the final step, click done.


This completes setting up two factor authentication for your account.

After this has been set up, you will be required to enter this code when signing into Office 365 online.

The authenticator code on your phone will change every 30 seconds, so this should be double-checked before submitting the code.
